Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence systems in small businesses, where it starts….!

Hello readers it’s been a long time since I posted a blog, I was really busy with a project work, I worked as a team member to build an AI which is quite capable of doing some unique functionalities with supervised machine learning with categorical variables, this is the reason I decided to write this blog where businesses can use machine learning to increase efficiency, save time and enhance process.

What is Machine Leaning? According to IBM “Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science which focuses on the use of data and algorithms to imitate the way that humans learn, gradually improving its accuracy” (IBM, 2021).

According to Accenture, Artificial intelligence is a constellation of many different technologies working together to enable machines to sense, comprehend, act, and learn with human-like levels of intelligence. Maybe that’s why it seems as though everyone’s definition of artificial intelligence is different: AI isn’t just one thing (Accenture, 2021).

Technologies like machine learning and natural language processing are all part of the AI landscape. Each one is evolving along its own path and when applied in combination with data, analytics and automation, can help businesses achieve their goals, be it improving customer service or optimizing the supply chain.

In real life, for say you teach a model about different types of road signs for example, "60 km only, School Zone, zebra crossing, red signal and so on all the signs to the model. Now the model is integrated to a car where the model as soon as it notices the signs it gives a caution, for say school zone ahead, for a machine learning to work efficiently large sets of data needs to be fed to the model, i.e., for example, school zone ahead, multiple images with different styles and color shades need to be learn't by the algorithm to work with high accuracy (WRC, 2022).

Two major approaches towards AI are;

1. Human approach:

  • Systems that think like humans

  • Systems that act like humans

2. Ideal approach:

  • Systems that think rationally

  • Systems that act rationally

Narrow (or “weak”) AI Some go even further to define artificial intelligence as “narrow” and “general” AI. Most of what we experience in our day-to-day lives is narrow AI, which performs a single task or a set of closely related tasks. Examples include:

  • Weather Apps

  • Digital Assistants

  • Software that analyzes data to optimize a given business function

These systems are powerful, but the playing field is narrow: They tend to be focused on driving efficiencies. But, with the right application, narrow AI has immense transformation power—and it continues to influence how we work and live on a global scale.

General (or “strong”) AI General AI is more like what you see in science fiction films, where sentient machines emulate human intelligence, thinking strategically, abstractly and creatively, with the ability to handle a range of complex tasks. While machines can perform some tasks better than humans (e.g. data processing), this fully realized vision of general AI does not yet exist outside the silver screen. That’s why human-machine collaboration is crucial—in today’s world, artificial intelligence remains as an extension of human capabilities, not a replacement.

Now the interesting part is, how can small businesses integrate AI and make use of this to automate few processes and enhance efficiency with increased productivity.

Application of artificial intelligence in business

You can use AI technologies to:

  • Improve customer services - Use virtual assistant programs to provide real-time support to users (Optimize tasks, Chat Bot, Interactive Voice Responses (IVR) and many more tasks).

  • Automate workloads - Collect and analyse data from smart sensors, or use machine learning (ML) algorithms to categorize work, automatically route service requests.

  • Optimize logistics - Use AI-powered image recognition tools to monitor and optimize your infrastructure, plan transport routes, etc.

  • Increase Manufacturing output and efficiency - Automate production line by integrating industrial robots into your workflow and teaching them to perform labor-intensive or remarkable tasks.

  • Prevent outages - Use of anomaly detection techniques to identify patterns that are likely to disrupt your business, such as an IT outage. Specific AI software may also help you to detect and deter security intrusions.

  • Predict performance - Use of AI applications to determine when you might reach performance goals, such as response time to help desk calls.

  • Predict behavior - Use of ML algorithms to analyse patterns of online behavior to, serve tailored product offers, detect credit card fraud or target appropriate adverts.

  • Manage and analyse your data - AI can help you interpret and mine your data more efficiently than ever before and provide meaningful insight into your assets, your brand, staff or customers.

  • Improve your marketing and advertising - for example, effectively track user behavior and automate many routine marketing tasks.
